It is definitely hard to save on vacation with a family of 5! Often, we skip vacationd for this exact reason! I wish more cities had the same website that San Antonio has put together! It is called SAVE – San Antonio Vacation Experience They have all the deals in that city on the same exact site in one location! They have all the deals and promotions on places to stay including a DEAL LIST tab that will even tell you how to get a free child admission ticket! Do you know how much time this has saved me? I am constantly looking up coupon codes for activities, Restaurants, hotels, Movies, Waterparks, Gas, etc. This site does it all for you! Check it out… I found 10% off a helicopter ride which could really come in handy, $2 off the Texas transportation museum, Free child admission to the Imax theatre, $7 off admission to Splashtown (which I LOVED to go to), and Super Cheap discounts on hotel rooms, not to mention $3.00 off each person for trolley rides and $2 off sightseeing tours at the Alamo for kids, The only thing you need to do is make sure you pack everything you need so you do not have to run to Walmart and buy toothpaste at regular price 
I have actually lived in San Antonio for two years while I was in the military and the attractions are amazing! There are ENDLESS opportunities there!
